In Shakespeare's Othello, we have the opportunity to teach students about racism, interracial relationships, gender roles, politics and many other relevant issues to this day. By teaching Shakespeare's Othello in AP Lang I can better prepare my students for the argument essay, rhetorical analysis as well as exposure to the antiquated language that they will be tested on. However, getting students excited about reading Othello can be a challenge especially when they have already had negative experiences in the past with Othello. Shakespeare meant for his plays to be performed and as such students should only read them in dramatic form. This can be intimidating though, especially for a group of highly intelligent introverts. Costumes help hide insecurities, they allow students to take on the persona of a character without feeling judgement, so when they make a mistake reading, they are not so self conscious about it. Costumes also help bring the story to life leaving the students entertained, as well as better comprehension of the text, the language and the arguments being made.
