The Freshman curriculum has been marked by providing classical examples of literature that our students often struggle to find relevant connections. Even though we can appreciate the historical foundations of our literary world in selections such as "The Odyssey," and "Romeo and Juliet," today's students must maneuver in complex cultural, economic, and social relationships. The contemporary, culturally diverse literature and poetry selections that I have chosen will be an excellent supplement to our Freshman curriculum. For example, "To Kill a Mockingbird," can begin discussions of racial disparity and equality; however, these contemporary selections not only include challenges to African Americans, but also Native Americans, Asian Americans, and those with other differences. These selections will allow my students to enrich their own experience and appreciate the struggles and insights gained from diversity. My goal is for my students to see strength in diversity.
