The colored sit spots will give my students a visual space to follow a code (computer programming) to move Rosie the dog to collect her bones on her path to home. Sets of partners will use the code cards to follow directions to collect all the bones in the least amount of steps. The cookie sheets will be used with magnets to practice the coding path to see if it works before they turn it in and "run" the program on the colored spots.
With these materials, the students are learning how to follow and create codes in order to be able to build a robot, program it with a code, and complete a challenge to collect blocks. The practice with Rosie, will allow the students to understand no steps can be skipped. They will be able to make mistakes and learn from them. My students have a natural curiosity to know how things work "behind the scenes." This project will only deepen their curiosity, strengthen their confidence if a trial-and-error atmosphere, and push them to explore unknown avenues in aspects of life.
