I have the privilege of teaching music to almost 700 fifth and sixth graders in a public school in upstate New York. They are wonderful people with beautiful souls and a hunger for learning! My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Poverty is on the rise in our area. Since I started teaching in this area, poverty has increased greatly. We now have over 70% of our student population qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Due to the increase in poverty, our students are more stressed. Maslow's hierarchy of needs teaches us that we can't focus on higher level learning and thinking when the basic needs (food, clothes, and shelter) are not met. My students often come in distracted and depressed due to things happening at home which are outside of their control, but greatly affecting their ability to learn.
