With these books, my students will experience a rich foundation for fictional reading. My students have never read Harry Potter, and choose skinny chapter books with light plots. Even with encouragement, my students continue to deny themselves of reading a thought-provoking novel. I am confident that exposing my students to a book like Harry Potter will boost their confidence in choosing a 'thick' book and tackling deeper themes. It is my goal to immerse my readers into a compelling plot and transform their vocabulary, knowledge, and imagination. Twenty years ago, a generation of children and adults made Harry Potter a household name. While my students know who Harry Potter is, they do not know Harry on a personal level...they haven't become friends yet. My students have not gone through the joys and trials of life with Harry. Many of my students have experienced difficult issues dealt with in Harry Potter; neglect, loneliness, and tragedy. Yet, students have yet to connect with a character that can show them the flip side to that coin--love, friendship, and perseverance. With a teacher-led reading of Harry Potter, my students have the potential to tackle tough material without fear of being left behind in the reading. My students will be able to analyze a piece of literature that has depth to it, and recognize the use of literary elements in a larger novel than they are used to.
