Manipulatives, patterns, and anchor charts are all crucial to reaching every learner in my classroom. Some learn by touch, some learn with visuals, some learn by auditory, and others need a combination of all three and more. For example, many students this age struggle with visualizing 3-D images on 2-D paper; the plastic manipulatives on my wishlist will allow scholars to physically touch the shape and investigate its properties. Chart paper allows visual learners to create representations to show their peers, as well as encourages teamwork and public speaking skills; whiteboards increase participation across the classroom, particularly for students who don't feel comfortable sharing aloud. The posters in my room serve as educational aids, and posters in Spanish help to foster a classroom environment of a community without erasure. Sixth-grade math covers foundational skills such as completing operations with positive and negative numbers, writing equations, and solving word problems. Without these, higher levels of mathematics like Algebra and Calculus become increasingly difficult and frustrating. Each student in my room is a mathematician, whether they know it or not. My goal with this campaign is to provide resources for a diverse set of learners to have access to math material. I never want a student to feel as though they are "not a math person" or as though mathematics is something they cannot do. Students with disabilities, ELLs, and all kinds of learners have a place in mathematics and using multiple representations can help show them this. Thank you for your support!
