The 2019-2020 school year was definitely one for the books. We are working hard to plan ahead to the Fall. None of us can say for sure what the future looks like in regards to education. However, our school is being proactive in its approach by planning novel study units that students can do in the classroom, at home, or in a blended environment. Novel studies offer a rich opportunity for students to explore new concepts, make deep connections, and reflect on their own experiences. This novel is called Buried Onions by Gary Soto. The main character in this novel strives to always improve himself in the midst of family tragedy and hardship. Themes of identity and urban communities drive the story. Through this novel, I hope that my students will learn to connect real lived experiences to literature. Our district is requiring that students have their own material, due to the health risk of sharing supplies. Therefore, it is essential that each student receives their own copy of this novel. Additionally, I've seen that students engage more with the text when they have a personal copy to take home and study. Please help ensure that each of my students are able to take home this novel once the school starts by donating to this project.
