"Mathematician- an expert in or student of mathematics" In our classroom, we are all mathematicians. Most of my students are currently in the concrete operational stage of development. They need concrete objects to solve problems, represent numbers, and describe shape attributes. Three of our upcoming math units are Geometry, Place Value, and Addition and Subtraction. Using tools such as Giant Magnetic Base Ten Blocks will help my students distinguish between different place values (hundreds, tens, and ones). Student Rekenreks, Magnetic Ten Frames Dry-Erase Paddles, and additional math games will allow me to differentiate my instruction based on my students' mathematical thinking and understanding. Having geometric solids and shape building sets will help my students identify the attributes for each shape (i.e. the number of vertices, the number of sides, etc.). My students have an innate love of learning! They need additional math manipulatives to build a solid mathematical foundation before moving on to second grade.
