The majority of my students are Hispanic, African American, or Pacific Islander who live in the Southeast San Diego. Our school provides a safe haven from the challenges of everyday urban life, and it provides the structure and caring environment that all middle school students need. My students read well below grade level and they might be considered "at risk" students, however even with these obstacles they are extremely eager to learn. Students come before and after school, as well as lunch, to get 1:1 tutoring or get the extra help they need to improve their reading comprehension, fluency, and foundation skills. My challenge is simply getting books into the hands of my students either for a class set of literature books or independent books from the class library. Please help my wonderful students.
