My students know that books can take you places you've never been. Sometimes classic novels don't hold the interest of my students. They like to read graphic novels like the Amulet series, historical fiction, fantasy, and new best selling middle-grade fiction, such as Patina, Sunny and Lu by Jason Reynolds. My school library is definitely functioning but doesn't have a wide range of high-interest texts. Students are eager to read texts that mirror their own identity and cultures as well as texts that offer a window into contrasting experiences. With successful funding, students will have access to texts that interest them and increase comprehension and fluency. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in literacy.
