My school is 100% low income and the student population is 80% Hispanic and 20% African American. We are a Title I school and majority of my scholars have not been farther than the neighborhood they live in. These scholars come from homes where the parents speak no English so sometimes getting help at home with school work doesn't happen. We have to be creative at reaching our scholars as well as assisting them with some of the basic necessities. The scholars want to learn, but most of them are 2 to 3 grade levels behind. Many of them are struggling readers. We try to expose our scholars to many experiences through working with technology and providing as much hands-on experiences as possible to enhance their learning and assist with student progress. Our school is dedicated to making sure our scholars learn to read and become productive citizens in our community.
