My school supports hundreds of students in need. As we enter the new school year it is also our fourth year being trauma informed with implementation of calm down areas. Our refocus room is our building wide calm room that serves our most challenging students. Students come to the refocus room to regulate in a quiet and safe place when they are overwhelmed by big emotions. In this space students also, receive lessons using two social-emotional curriculums; Zones of Regulation and Conscious Discipline. We learn, practice and implement tools and strategies. Proper rest is such a key piece in student development. Students often come to school tired due to circumstances beyond their control. Students will grab a pillow and lay on the floor, or take a bean bag to a corner. I would like to provide our students with a comfortable, futon bed. With adequate sleep students will have better self control thus, a more impactful learning experience in the classroom.
