Kindergarteners come in with a wide variety of skill sets and schooling backgrounds. Because of this, most early elementary teachers run their classrooms with centers, where students move from space to space practicing different skills and participating in different activities at each location. Currently, our classroom doesn’t have sufficient tables to make this work efficiently, and one of our centers would need to be on the rug, which isn’t as conducive to the high-rigor reading and writing I expect from my students. This table will also allow my students to each have their own desk space to call their own, labeled with their name and stocked with their own materials. This helps kids feel ownership over their space, helps them feel like stewards of the classroom and builds our class community of mutual responsibility.
