My students commonly go home to an empty house, so respectful, courteous conversation does not come natural. Many students speak a second language at home, so it is even more beneficial to create these academic conversations. To combat this problem, we are focusing on how to talk to each other in a kind, courteous way. By using accountable talk stems, my students are learning how to agree, disagree, and advance conversation with their peers. Right now, we are sitting at a long table with bulky chairs that are a hindrance to the tone of the conversation. With the funding of this project, my students will have the opportunity to sit closer and listen better. With this added furniture, our entire classroom tone will change.
