Students, even those in areas of high poverty, live in a technology-based, video game driven world. They are used to color graphics, enhanced images, and interactive content at every turn. In order to reach them, I need to keep up with what they experience every day. However, the most effective way to do this isn't technology driven. Currently, in my class of 23 students, 78% are reading at least one level below grade level. I have 72% at least one level below in math. This means that I have to not only find a way to grow their math and reading ability for one year, but two and, in some cases, even three years. Guided lessons taught in small groups are one of the most effective ways to bridge the achievement gap for students. Unfortunately, these lessons don’t lend themselves to computer-based learning. But that doesn’t mean I can’t make it entertaining and inviting. That’s where the color printer comes into play. It would not only allow me to create a 600 page guided reading kit for my class, it would also allow me to integrate colorful, engaging content in all subject areas for my students. In addition, the printer would also allow me the freedom to continue to do what is best for my class with less stress. Our county has decided that they are no longer replacing printers in classrooms in favor of centralized printing. Our copier is aging and is frequently down. This means my students may not have all of the necessary materials for a lesson. Having my own copier/printer/scanner in my room would ensure that my students would never be without what they need. It seems silly to adults, but for kids, color can make a simple activity engaging and enlightening.
