First grade is a magical year. It is a year of curiosity, imagination and amazing growth, both academically and emotionally. My students are bright, playful and inquisitive. They truly love to learn and explore the world around them, from the lush student grown garden to the magical landscapes of their favorite books. However, first grade is also a year full of very big emotions and many students are still learning how to identify, process and respond to the various emotional variants that form throughout the day. I strive to equip my students with an emotional vocabulary and active practice working through their feelings to help them gain ownership of their bodies and minds. Many of my kids come to school with heightened stress and anxiety from their home environments. It is a lot for any person to manage, let alone a six year old! I want my classroom to be an emotionally nurturing and informative place.
