At my elementary school our vision is to create biliterate thinkers through our Spanish dual language program. As a first year teacher I am determined to provide an environment in which my students can succeed in this vision. By engaging my students through interesting stories and visually stunning Spanish books, I truly believe that I will be able to provide an exciting and enjoyable space for learning. Creating a Spanish library entirely from scratch is a challenge and through this curated collection of books, I believe I will be able to provide many opportunities for real progress to be made in learning a second language. With this library, my students will be able to regularly participate in group reading activities and gain exposure to new vocabulary during teacher led read alouds. We will break down unfamiliar words in the stories and practice our speaking skills along side constant exposure to Spanish sight words. I hope to be able to create a curriculum that revolves around thematic units like seasons, holidays, folk tales, animals and Hispanic culture. With a wide variety of topics and genres, I believe that I can inspire a love of learning Spanish and bring our second graders one step closer to conversational language and biliteracy.
