My school is an urban, public high school. As a biology department, which teaches the district's freshmen, we have the highest number of students participate in our science course. Our students are highly inquisitive people, who learn through getting their minds and hands messy, and figuring out science for themselves, to understand the practical applications it has in their lives. Our students design and facilitate over forty investigations over the school year to determine how different living organisms' anatomy meets their physiology--including observing respiration in different fruit juices, analyzing the effects mutations have on flies, and determining how drugs affect the nervous system of fish. Many of our students have sub-standard skills in reading, writing, and mathematics when entering high school. As a team of freshmen teachers, we try very hard to help our students grapple with these deficiencies, overcome hurdles, and become active problem-solvers.
