I work in the poorest congressional district in the country and many of my eighth-grade students dislike math, because they find it frustrating and incomprehensible. The more time I spend with them, the more it becomes clear to me that this frustration is the result of a very basic lack of number sense and basic operational skills. A large percentage of my students enter the sixth grade far below grade level in mathematics and often lacking basic computational skills. This year, my school has instituted a basic skills math program to reinforce number sense and help our students become faster at basic calculations. My students love this time and work hard at it, because they can easily see and monitor their success as they move from easier to more complex operations.
