Technology is an ever growing field, and in the area of speech/language pathology mobile technology can enhance communication for my students. Downloadable communication apps provide motivational and diverse ways for my students to learn speech and language skills that are otherwise challenging or not yet acquired. An iPad and apps can help teach skills in the areas of language and speech disorders, cognitive impairments, auditory processing disorders, social language impairments, and more. It can provide daily articulation practice, functional and instant visual supports, expressive and receptive language practice, and highly motivating lessons that increase student engagement. An iPad gives the opportunity to trial various programs with students to select appropriate features for an augmentative communication app (AAC), which would otherwise cost thousands of dollars per AAC device. Many therapy apps track progress and data, freeing me up to better teach, observe and provide hands on support. Since my caseload has a diverse group of kids with different disorders, an iPad gives me the ability to address many different needs in one place. With 256 GB of memory it will be able to house more apps for different needs (For ex: PECS IV+ provides non verbal children with visuals to make sentences, share messages and gives them a voice. Articulation station app provides target sounds and pictures for practice. The social express app provides social scenarios for many age levels, etc). Enough space will allow for data to be saved and demonstrate student growth over the quarters, trimesters, or years. As technology becomes more readily available to families, recommendations for communication apps can be given to encourage practice and carryover of skills at home and on mobile devices. With the latest iPad technology, apps can be kept up to date and used to their greatest capacity.
