Over the past four years, my school has experienced a change in demographics which has led to an increased percentage of minority students with second language issues (currently 9.1% of our student population) and students struggling with poverty (currently 69.9%, as identified by students who receive free and reduced lunch). My students generally have a rough home life and school is often times the only consistent thing in their lives. I find that my students are learning best when they are given connection to the material as well as when I make the material exciting and relevant to them.
