With the freedom to choose their materials/medium as well as the artwork they want to create, students are showing so much interest in mediums of art not traditionally taught in most grade school art classes. Excitingly, this is encouraging different career choices that most students have never considered as falling under the arts. The most prevalent art center currently being used is our fibers and textiles center, with fashion designing being the biggest topic of interest among both male and female students.
So far students have been having to improvise due to a lack of resources, mainly being a mannequin and sewing machine, and have been modeling for one another. This takes time away from the model students own art making. And while learning hand sewing techniques is a valuable and practical skill to have, that is automatically a required objective designated by the teacher when choosing to use sewing materials. Providing students with a professional sewing machine will only enhance their craftsmanship while also enabling their motivation to create actual complete outfits, including intricate detailing and all. My students are reaching big and are motivated to curate a fashion show by the end of the year, and of course being at the fragile ages of 12 and 13, only want to publicize pieces of work that they are extremely confident and excited about. So please help my students reach their goals!
