My new classroom is tile and doesn't have a rug. In the past my students' carpet spots have been their homes. They have ownership over this spot. Having a rug would provide my students with a comfortable place that is theirs. Our carpet time is full of meaningful learning each day from read alouds to sharing math strategies, from student led discussions to writing lessons, from sight word sing alongs to phonics. This is the place my kiddos will gather together several times a day to participate and learn. Having a rug would not only give my students a place to call home but it would also help organize our learning space. I am not sure if you have ever asked a group of 25 six and seven-year-olds to come join you for a book read aloud, but without designated spots, before you know it, you cannot even begin reading. 20 out of 25 of those students are arguing over where they want to sit and who is in their way. When students feel safe and comfortable in an environment they are more likely to challenge themselves and push themselves to grow! Having an inviting meeting place will also build up the culture of a positive classroom community. By helping our class fund this rug you will be investing in students' education as lifelong learners.
