Social Studies has often been seen by students as being a boring class where they read about events from the past, take a test, and that's it. In my classes, I have been working hard to bring it to life through simulations and projects. By putting the students in the shoes of someone else through projects and simulations, they develop empathy, as well as problem solving skills, all while incorporating math, science and physics with the traditional Social Studies curriculum. One of the students' favorite projects involves creating an invention to solve a historical problem. The project is very fun, but it also requires a lot of materials like plastic, cardboard, and heavy tape. The additional items I have selected will allow my students to have a bigger variety of materials to choose from in creating these inventions. Using 3D printing pens will allow us to incorporate new technology into a traditional paper and pencil style classroom. Things like the self-stick easel pad allow for collaboration during simulations, and are an easy way for students to post their group's ideas. The clay and paint will allow students to make models of things like the human brain and then label the different parts and what they do. I have seen the engagement in my classes grow exponentially since I started incorporating more hands-on lessons, and your support will allow me to continue and increase those opportunities.
