I am passionate about giving everyone, regardless of their disability a quality education in which they can maximize their independence and feel proud of their accomplishments both academically and social-emotionally. My DonorsChoose project is to provide each of my students with an iPad that will be for their one to one use in the classroom. Many schools provide laptops or Chromebooks for students' one to one use, but my students will benefit from having iPads for a variety of reasons. First, some of my students are nonverbal and rely on communication technology to talk with others and share their thoughts in the classroom. Students' specific communication programs can be installed on iPads and accessed by the student independently. On the other hand, if a student is verbal, but requires more assistance when typing or writing they can use the iPad to turn their speech into text. To me, it is so important that all of my students have a way to communicate their wants and needs to feel comfortable and safe at school. In addition to using the iPad for communication, students can also access a variety of engaging apps for academic or life skills projects they work on in the classroom or community. I imagine teaching my students how to use technology to travel in community settings like riding a city bus or how to locate items in a grocery store after creating a grocery list. Academically, the iPad is also useful for our EL students who benefit from hearing stories and instruction in their primary language or using translation tools to complete a lesson successfully. Books at students' instructional levels can also be accessed through the iPad and often can be found with Spanish and English text side by side to support comprehension in both languages.
