I work at a Title 1 school with a minority population of 95% and 87% of students are economically disadvantaged. My school does not have a library. These books would help to build my classroom library! Students in my class have free reading time for the first 10 minutes of every class. No assignments, no curriculum, just reading to read!
I have done A LOT of research on the benefits that reading can have on students. For example, "Significant research by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, or OECD, (2002) was conducted on how socioeconomic status related to student success. Their research indicated that the reading habits of adolescent students may have had a greater influence on student achievement than socio-economic status. This would suggest that it was not a socio-economic status that affected student success, rather the ability to access and utilize books." (The Journal of Multidisciplinary Graduate Research)
This is not to say the socio-economic status does not affect student success, but to say that READING can be a huge factor in overcoming the disadvantages that come with said socio-economic status.
I have a small classroom library, but if I want to provide my students with REAL books that they can read in my classroom and take home to read... I need more books!
These kids deserve the opportunity to fall in love with reading! YOU can provide that for them!
