Many people don't realize that Kindergartners are now expected to read and write independently by the end of the school year. To accomplish that, students need to learn about rhyming, beginning and ending sounds, word parts, letter names and sounds, segmenting and blending words, etc. It takes a lot for Kindergartners to learn to read, and there are so many games and activities I use to help students learn these skills, but I'm looking for modern ways to help them, too! We're in an age where teachers are fighting with technology and gadgets for our students' attention and engagement. Technology has kept up with educational needs and there are many games and resources that my students deserve to play and have fun with while continuing to develop important skills needed to become literate. With these Kindle Fire tablets, students will have the opportunity to listen to books read aloud, play games that teach letters and reading skills, and independently read stories at their level. We will use the tablets in our daily literacy centers while students are working independently on reading and writing skills. Students will use Starfall, BrainPop, and TumbleBooks for 10-15 minutes each day. Not only will they become reading literate, but these tablets can also help students become technology literate, too!
