Most of my students respond best to "hands-on" project-based work. A lot of the supplies I'm requesting will help me build an art cart for use in the R&R space as well as for these projects. For example, at the beginning of the school year, students will complete an identity chart. This assignment helps students consider the many factors that shape who we are as individuals and as communities. Sharing their own identity charts with peers can help students build relationships and break down stereotypes. In this way, identity charts can be used as an effective classroom community-building tool. By donating to this project, you will be providing a special designated Social-Emotional Learning classroom space to promote literacy and give my students a calm, enriching environment to help them practice responsible decision-making and work on self-awareness and self-management skills. It's important for students to have the option to stay in the classroom if possible when they're having a tough time and need to "reset." They'll have the option to read an engaging book/short story or choose an activity. These activities will help students practice skills such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation. Throughout the year, I hope to equip my students with tangible and concrete coping skills they can use to process their emotions. The space will be calming, welcoming, and safe for all students. I hope to promote literacy in struggling readers by offering reading YA fiction, graphic novels, and short stories as options. Choices of art activities, manipulatives, ESL games, With your help, I can provide my students with this much needed "R&R" space.
