Being a kid can be overwhelming, and many of the students I work with struggle with regulating their own emotions and behaviors within the special education classroom. I want to create a calm, safe space within my classroom in order to help students practice self-regulation with independence. Providing a cool down space within my classroom will give my students the responsibility of self-regulating their own emotions in a peaceful, quiet, cozy place. Teaching children self-regulation and how to become aware of their own emotions and feels is crucial. Creating a cool down corner within my classroom is ultimately to give my students the opportunity to use the space with independence, whenever they feel the need to. My students will need comfy seating and sensory calming objects in order to practice their self-regulation skills with independence. The items I selected for our calm down area be used to create a cozy, calm place for students to regain control over their behavior and emotions. The bean bag chairs will provide a soft place to sit while selecting a sensory object from the white bin. The Sensory Sox and noise canceling headphones can be used by students who need just a little extra sensory input. The books I've chosen will be read, whole group, and be housed within the cool down space for students to explore on their own as well. Thank you!
