The typical morning procedure in an elementary classroom is students completing some type of skills review, usually on a worksheet. Students are told this is done to get their brains ready to learn. Unfortunately, this often has a negative affect on students. Many students will come in later in the morning than necessary or try to find something else to do such as playing in the hallways or going to visit several teachers in the building, which can be disruptive to those classrooms. Students want to avoid morning work because they are tired and do not enjoy having to come into the room, be quiet, and work on a paper of grammar/reading/math skills, many of which are review from previous years and topics students may not fully remember or understand. I'm hoping to change how my students begin their day in a positive way. With games, puzzles, and STEM activities taking the place of the typical morning worksheet, students' attitudes will change about their morning routine in the classroom. I will have multiple rotations each morning for students to participate in. One station will be for puzzles such as the mind puzzles and brain teaser game. Another will be a building station for activities such as the laser maze and the IQ builder STEM toys. A different station will be critical thinking games such as the iTrax and SET games. Providing the opportunity to participate in hands-on, critical thinking activities will truly wake up their brains and help them get ready to learn. I have collaborated with a gifted endorsed teacher at my school to select age-appropriate games that will benefit every type of learner, regardless of ability level. I can't wait to see how my students grow as a result of this project!
