Approximately 95% of my students participate in the Federal lunch program and of those 50% are second language speakers. Many of them live in Federal housing or low income apartments near the school. My school has close to 750 students and is a school wide Title I, provision II school, which means that 82% are eligible to receive a free or reduced price lunch. The student population is made up of approximately 70% Hispanics, 20% African American, and 10% other. The school has a population of about 100 students with disabilities and 200 students identified as gifted. Students can participate in the performing arts magnet or in the marine science academy. My students participate in the Marine Science Academy and their studies focus on stewardship of the marine science environment that surrounds the school and their community.
