Social studies has become very difficult to teach and not for the reasons you might think. It's hard to teach because good history texts for middle schoolers are hard in short supply. When I find colorful, engaging books that are written so 7th graders can understand them, I want to add them to my classroom library right away. Kids of all ages love pictures and middle schoolers need American History broken down for them. 7th graders don't understand that the War of 1812 happened after the Revolutionary War but before the Civil War. Time lines and dates are tricky when you have only been alive a little over a decade. Books that have pictures or charts and break down 18th century language are a true gift to me and my students. These types of books keep kids engaged and help teach them critical thinking skills. If price were no object I would have nothing but fun, colorful social studies books in my classroom. Sadly, price is a problem. I thank you for supporting my classroom and bringing bright, colorful, easier to understand books about diverse topics in American History into my classroom. My students will be so exited to read these books.
