The famous Edward de Bono coined one of my favorite quotes, "Creativity involves breaking out of expected patterns in order to look at things in a different way." This kind of creativity is exactly what I work to inspire within my students each and every day. My students are kindergarten through fifth-grade artists who attend an elementary school in an economically and racially diverse border city. Many of my students are on the free/reduced lunch program; several of them don't know where they'll sleep each night. Providing my students the outlet to achieve success through creativity and art, as well as academics helps them to realize their greatest potential. Because my students work so hard to overcome so many life challenges, both academically and personally, I want to ensure I am the best art teacher I can be for them.
