Ninety-two percent of the students at my school come from a socioeconomically disadvantaged background, and many of them have the added challenge of being English Language Learners. Reading is hard for them, and some have never been taught how to enjoy reading. In my Language Arts class, reading is our foundation from which everything stems. When the reading selection is not relevant to their lives, or interesting to read, they become reluctant to read at all. However, when they learn of a current event that may potentially affect them, their interests soar and they are often passionately immersed into a reading selection. Vivid pictures and videos help to awaken their senses and make the piece that much more meaningful to them. My students need engaging and relevant reading material in order to make reading come to life, that the may enjoy the ability to see different places and things through words.
