My students are learning from home during what might be the most troubling times of recent history, of their history. Learning from home might be more convenient for some, but for my students, it is challenging, At home, they may not have a quiet space to learn, a strong internet connection or an updated device, and they definitely do not have a computer mouse. They are trying to learn with Chromebooks provided to them by our district that are useful yes, but very limited. I work hard to find new and exciting digital tools and resources that I can use for my lessons and share with my students, however, these tools almost always work best with the use of a computer mouse. My students are loving these digital tools, like the digital whiteboards and spelling and multiplication arcade type games, however, they become easily frustrated when they are not able to write, create or click on what they need to because of the small mouse pad on their very basic Chromebooks. With everything that is going on around them, my students do not need yet another reason to be frustrated or stressed out. If each of my students had a computer mouse at home, they would be able to genuinely enjoy these digital tools and resources and most importantly, they would gain so much more from them. Student engagement would soar and so would their literacy and math skills and abilities. My students may not be able to control the pandemic, they may not be able to control when or if schools reopen, they may not be able to control if a family member gets ill or better, but they SHOULD be able to control how and what they click on. They SHOULD still be able to truly learn.
