Tools, such as lap desks and Chromebook desks allow my students to feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Being able to feel somewhat empowered creates "buy-in" which helps students stay engaged longer and take more pride in their own learning. Flexible seating options stimulate the sense of touch, which will help students who struggle with attention or have feelings of anxiousness. Wobbly seats allow students to exert energy that inhibits them from focusing or feeling comfortable. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. I have seen how choice can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
