It is impossible to ignore this global pandemic but particularly impossible in the school setting. Rather than ignore our current circumstance, I want to create this negative into a positive. The world of literature and social studies have intersected for so long yet few let the two merge as one in the classroom setting. My goal is to bring in new literature that helps this pairing be as wonderful as I know it to be. The novel "Fever 1793" by Laurie Halse Anderson follows the life of a young girl living in Philadelphia during an outbreak of yellow fever. She soon leaves her home to find out that escaping the disease will not be possible. She must learn how to cope with the changes around her as quickly as she can exactly like my students have had to during this time in our world. Stories similar to Fever 1793 offer a unique look at the world. While 1793 seems such a long time ago to the students, they will be able to sympathize with the characters plight since, in a way, it is their's as well.
