What is the day like in my autism classroom? Wow! Where do I start? I imagine the minds of these small children working so hard to complete simple tasks. They struggle, but they love to learn. They have behaviors that we sometimes don't understand, but in other ways they are just as typical as any other child. I work in a low functioning level 1 autism classroom. I teach kids from kindergarten to 2nd grade. The school itself is a Title 1 school in a lower socio-economic area of Gwinnett County in Duluth, Georgia. My kids are AMAZING! Autism may be a mysterious disorder, but these kids blow my mind daily. Being that they are in a low functioning classroom, they are all non-verbal and struggle to communicate. We work daily on ways to teach them to communicate in hopes of decreasing inappropriate behaviors. Lots of learning is done in baby steps and at times it takes months (even years) to learn simple tasks such as holding a pencil correctly or doing a basic 10 piece puzzle.
