Help me to create a "calm corner" for my 6th graders. Our kids are often going through their own battles every day, we have students facing, homelessness, food insecurity, deaths due to gun violence, domestic violence or drug addiction. These students come to school every day with those issues in their backpack. Oftentimes, those struggles show themselves in class as "behaviors". "When little people are overwhelmed by big emotions, it's our job to share in their calm, not to join their chaos." -L.R.Knost It's unfair to punish students for their frustration, anger, fear, or sadness. They shouldn't be condemned for having big emotions in response to the trauma they're facing. They need to be taught how to manage those emotions and be given space to express and process them. Help me give my students this space. Help me to give them a safe space, where they can learn in a comfortable and calm environment. The floor rockers, puzzles and books will be perfect for our calm down corner.
