Jasper Elementary is in the heart of Appalachia (Southern Ohio). The larger percentages of my students are from low income families that do not have the means to make their child's dreams and visions come true. Our district has lost funding in the past several years as well. As a result, our Physical Education Teacher, Art Teacher, and Social Worker positions were all absorbed. Focusing on my 2nd Grade Enrichment students, I observe their thirst for hands-on projects, as well as their excitement for learning new things. I love to watch them learn via inquiry- learning without effort is priceless. However, as an educator for almost 10 years in this building, I realize that the cost is what's holding these specific children back. They toss lifelines daily in their conversations, illustrations and journals. These amazing kids are reaching out for the knowledge in which they thirst. They are in need of art, technology, books, affection and attention.
