Learning about history through stories is a great way to engage my 11th graders and give them different perspectives. The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, while a fiction book, provides students refining their literacy skills while also reading about a soldiers journey in the Vietnam War. "Stories are eternity, even when memories are erased, when there is nothing to remember except the story" - Tim O'Brien Stories are the looking glass into the historical world. My students will be interacting with this book as we move throughout our Vietnam unit to gain a deeper understanding of what a Vietnam Soldier went through.
