When I arrived at my school in September, one of the first things I discovered was that we were lacking a library. My school has been unable to provide many books to our students, and the books we have provided have not held my students' interest. In a world where so much entertainment comes from stimulating media like video games and television, it is often difficult to find books that hold the attention of my fifth graders. Furthermore, my students often lack books that center characters of color, and my students frequently ask if we are able to get more books where their backgrounds and experiences are represented. Help me create a classroom library that will inspire my students to become lifelong lovers of reading. I am hoping to provide my students with a classroom library that has books of all different genres featuring diverse and representative characters. I am hoping to provide books at all different reading levels so my students are able to be challenged and grow from their reading. Some of the books on this list are new to my students. Others are books that I already have one or two copies of in my classroom--and there's a waiting list for these copies. When my students have been able to get the books that they want to read, they are such passionate readers that they take the books home and finish them overnight, and often I have to tell them to stop reading under their desks while I'm teaching! Please help me continue to get my students excited about reading and instill in them a lifelong passion for reading.
