We want to expand our library and bring more reading materials to our students. The students don't know how amazing and fun reading can be, because in 3rd and 4th grade all they do is drill reading passages, and drill standardized test taking skills. When I was a student I loved my reading class, the problem is that when these students arrive to 5th grade they absolutely dread reading. Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body: And as an incredibly creative teacher with ADHD, I try to make reading as fun and interactive as possible. So I bring in novels to teach the reading skills rather than just, "Here student, read this passage and bubble in the correct multiple choice answer." We have a reading interactive journal to focus and target each skill. The thing is, we don't have class sets. I can sit there and read to them, that's not a problem, they can follow along on the document camera. But when each student has a book, it builds responsibility and it helps their fluency. And also, because we have interactive journals in math, reading, and science the parents tend to buy their kids one or if we're lucky two composition notebooks, and I end up purchasing them myself. So if you could please help us out with these class sets of novels (A Wrinkle in Time, and The Great Gilly Hopkins) and some composition notebooks, we would be forever grateful!
