Many of the students in my class do not see themselves represented in the typical texts of a classroom. By incorporating Just Mercy into the curriculum, students will have a chance to dissect a non-fiction text with meaningful ties to the current injustices in our city, country, and world. Now is the time for students to read about and discuss difficult issues. Regardless of where students are on their journey to awareness, Just Mercy is an essential book when it comes to understanding the way racism permeates our justice system. The lessons about love, mercy, redemption, and humanity found in this book are invaluable and will help transform my curriculum.
