Technology is used in my classroom every day all day. I teach in a Computer Lab setting and students need access to updated technology to create and problem solve. Students often work in groups and are permitted to leave the classroom to film their stories; having iPads will allow them to do this. iPads are a powerful tool in the digital storytelling design process. My students need iPads to assist with the fundamentals of: filming, combining clips, correct-editing, construct-transitions, add audio and graphics.
Once students create their storyboards they are limited in the design process because of the older desktops in the lab. The lab computers are getting harder to update with software that requires more than web access. Many of our students have cell phones but some do not. There is also the fact that students don't bring their cell phones when they are needed. Having iPads available would level the playing field and limit that management piece. Once iPads are in the hands of the students they are free to focus on their projects.
iPads will allow my students to create stories using some of the best technology to date. Students will also advance their technology and literacy skills. More importantly, they will be excited about learning and telling stories that they care about.
