The students at my school in Houma, LA are from very diverse backgrounds. Most are second language learners as well as economically disadvantaged. Having limited English is often a deterrent to mastering math as it's a language all of its own. My students need math center games to create a more engaging and exciting classroom environment that supports their diverse learning needs. Although the majority of my students come to second grade with deficits in math and reading, they come in eager to learn and participate, and improved greatly by daily. These materials will enhance Differentiation and Student Success in my classroom! My students enjoy the use of manipulatives. These materials allow them to learn their basic skills in a concrete manner. This beginning skill is essential in order for them to move forward into the pictorial stage, and eventually abstract problem solving.
