Getting a set of interesting and developmentally appropriate novels will help the entire 5th grade. We use a novel approach to teaching literacy, but we don't have enough books to go around. It would be great to introduce such a charming story to my 5th graders. Imagine the faces of these kids if I can give them art supplies to use and a wonderful book to read. The theme of The One and Only Ivan is finding your identity. Ten year old children can truly relate to this theme and use it as a life lesson. I'm hoping that they will take these ideas with them in the future.
