We are a 6th, 7th, & 8th grade combined Special Education class consisting of students that are Intellectually Disabled. My students come from low income houses. We are in high demand of supplies that assist their needs to become successful learners. One approach that is very successful in the educational field is the use of flexible seating. Flexible seating provides students with the opportunity to choose from a variety of seating choices that help make students more comfortable in the classroom setting. As educators, we have to ask ourselves, how do our students like to learn? Flexible seating gives them the opportunity to explore learning beyond just a desk and chair. Students who struggle with "jitters" will benefit from the Wobble Chair to reduce their anxiety and movement and give them the ability to focus more on the task at hand. My students have a variety of wants and needs, therefore, expecting them to sit in the same place for hours at a time is not conductivce learning. With these resources, they get to pick how they want to learn. This will give students the chance to be in control of their own learning making the classroom more student-centered and their attitude towards learning more positive! I believe that if students are given their own "spot" to work they will truly enjoy learning more!
