My fifth grade students live in a struggling urban community in California. Almost half of the school population arrives at 7:00 in the morning and stays until 5:30 at night. The majority of this time is spent at a desk or table either eating a meal or engaging in their schoolwork. Their weekends are usually spent at home watching TV or playing video games. They play outside at recess but not in a structured program. The only opportunity they have for fitness or sports instruction is what I provide to them during their physical education time.
