My sixth graders learn in beautiful, yet expensive, Hawaii: the "melting pot" of cultural and diverse ethnic heritages. This is a low to middle income public school with both local and military children. They are curious and love hands on inquiry that is student led, and teacher facilitated with a focus on math and science as a means of problem solving. The span of learning abilities range from non-English speaking to gifted and talented students with every ability in between. This inclusive classroom is a lovely mixture that lends to collaboration of skills and ideas; skills needed beyond school years. The challenges we face with this mix is that while some students may have access to books, computers, and office supplies, about 60% do not. This inequity causes some students to have an advantage over others in learning through inquiry. Students are currently inquiring how ancient civilizations problem solved with math and science for ideas for their math and science projects.
